Author of WWII Historical Fiction

David Lowther is a war baby, born just four months before VE Day in New Malden, South West London. His family moved to Cardiff and then to Barry Island. His interest in WWII was fueled by a devastating TV documentary called Before Hindsight. He began writing about the second world war in the mid-seventies, blending his interest in the history with his talent for storytelling.

Soon it will be eighty years since the end of the Second World War in Europe. The war in the Far East continued for another three months. There were a number of very significant events in April 1945 including, of course, Hitler’s suicide at the end of that month.

Two weeks earlier, the Nazi Concentration Camp at Bergen-Belsen in Northern Germany was liberated by British soldiers. Its importance lay not just in rescuing thousands of prisoners close to death but also because the British public became aware, for the first time, what they’d been fighting for. My most recent novel ORDINARY HEROES has its climax in the Natzweiller Concentration Camp in Eastern France.  Please turn to my blog and news page to learn more.

Next month I’ll be reporting from Jersey when the islanders remember their own Liberation Day. The Channel Islands were the only part of Great Britain occupied by the Germans during the Second World War.

And above all, consider, remember and admire the fortitude and courage of all those people – real and imaginary – who enabled us to live in the (relatively) free world we have today.
